Ketamine Infusion Services Throughout Chicago
Ketamine, used for decades as a safe and effective anesthetic, in recent years has been recognized for its potential to treat psychiatric illness. Ketamine Infusion Therapy is now being used with great success to treat depression and anxiety disorders. At Advanced Ketamine Care, located in Oak Brook, Illinois, Dr. Abid Nazeer and his staff run a treatment center exclusively devoted to Ketamine Infusion Therapy and related psychiatric care (Advanced Psychiatric Solutions). While Ketamine has long been FDA-approved for anesthetic use, it has not been studied for psychiatric purposes for a long enough period to obtain FDA approval yet. This will likely change soon as the medical study data has already been presented and fast track for approval by FDA. Most new antidepressants that are being developed currently are very similar to ketamine. Nonetheless, it is a state-of-the-art form of psychiatric therapy, administered by infusion on an “off-label” basis. Because health insurance companies do not cover medications that are not FDA-approved, Ketamine infusions are expensive, but this will change once FDA approval comes through. In the meantime, for the patients who have been suffering psychiatric symptoms unrelieved by more traditional medications and/or talk therapy, Ketamine Infusion Therapy can be an invaluable gift at any price.
Many Advantages to Ketamine Infusion Therapy
Now used to treat depression, panic attacks, generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and PTSD, Ketamine Infusion Therapy has many advantages when compared to other types of treatment. It offers:
Amazingly, patients who receive an infusion of ketamine typically experience relief from their symptoms within hours of the treatment, in many cases within two to four hours. Nearly all patients feel a remarkable improvement in their mental state within 24 hours.
They may experience elevated mood, increased ability to concentrate, renewed self-esteem, improved appetite, sleep, and sexual desire. Tormenting suicidal thoughts may disappear. A recent study at Yale University has shown that ketamine can re-establish interrupted nerve connections that are necessary to process and overcome traumatic memories, explaining why PTSD symptoms may diminish or even disappear with Ketamine Infusion Therapy.
Outpatient and Time-Limited
In the same period of time most patients spend at a session talking to a psychotherapist,
a patient can receive a Ketamine infusion. Where once hospitalization, a day treatment program, or weeks waiting for an antidepressant to kick in may have been required, now a 45-minute infusion may do the trick.
Safe and Effective
Ketamine has a track record of decades of safe use as an anesthetic. Unlike other anesthetics, Ketamine does not slow vital bodily functions. This means that your heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate may slightly increase but also remain stable throughout the infusion. Also, Ketamine infusions are administered slowly and at a level one-tenth of the dosage used for anesthesia. Many studies have been done on the side effects of Ketamine and the medication’s overall profile is better than that of commonly used antidepressants.
Available for Older Adolescents
One of the advantages of Ketamine Infusion Therapy is that it can be administered to patients 16 years old and older. This means that troubled adolescents may be candidates for a treatment that will restore their sense of balance quickly and help them feel in control of their lives.
Advantages of Having Your Infusion at Advanced Ketamine Care
If you live in the Chicago area, (we have had patients come to us from as far away as Springfield and Milwaukee), it is well worth coming to Advanced Ketamine Care for infusion therapy. Not only are we one of very few treatment centers that offer this therapy, but, until recently, we were the only center run by a psychiatrist.
Advanced Ketamine Care Is Run by an Expert in Psychiatry and Ketamine Infusion
Most medical centers that offer Ketamine Infusion Therapy do not have psychiatrists at the helm. Dr. Nazeer is board-certified in Psychiatry/Neurology and Addiction Medicine as well. He is also the the Chief Medical Officer for Symetria Health, a national opiate treatment program. He has administered over 500 Ketamine Infusions and has a unique knowledge base about this treatment. No other psychiatric provider in Illinois has the first hand clinical experience with Ketamine Infusions.
Cost-Effective in the Long Run
Though Ketamine Infusion Therapy is expensive, when you come to Advanced Ketamine Care the fee you pay for treatments will cover not only the infusions themselves, but all associated psychiatric care, including medication adjustments, psychotherapy, and pharmacogenetic testing/analysis when needed. This means you will not be paying insurance co-pays or fees for psychiatrists who don’t accept Medicare or Medicaid.
The initial six treatments are $3,000 ($500 a piece); subsequent maintenance infusions are $450 each. The number of treatments a patient may require is quite variable, so it is difficult to predict the overall cost of treatment. While we await FDA approval, our practice is in the process of setting up an agreement with Care-Credit so our patients will be able to pay for treatment in smaller increments. If you think the cost of Ketamine Infusion Therapy is too high, contemplate the terrible cost of not receiving it.
Advanced Ketamine Care Offers All the Comforts of Home
While some centers offering Ketamine infusions are cold, clinical, and off-putting, Advanced Ketamine Care provides you with a fully reclining chair, free WiFi, free personal tablets to use, voice-controlled TV and music player, blankets, snacks/drinks, and seating for loved ones who want to accompany you. From the moment you arrive, you will feel welcomed and cared for. Because the intensity of the treatment may be anxiety-producing, we will be checking in with you periodically, and, of course, checking your vital signs at regular intervals. Our own Dr. Nazeer testifies to the fact that he has never had to stop an infusion due to adverse event or side effect.
Careful Ongoing Monitoring
At Advanced Ketamine Care we not only monitor our patients during infusions, but between them. Ketamine therapy wears off at some point for everyone. This is why maintenance infusions are necessary. Because not all patients or loved ones are always aware of subtle shifts in mood or stability, we track our patients on a daily basis through a software “mood monitor” that was created by a software developer who himself responded well to ketamine treatment.
